Have a craving for Greek food? Yia Mas in Sydney’s suburb of St Peters has to be one of the best Greek kitchens in Sydney. It’s traditional greek cuisine that tantalises the taste buds and leaves you wanting more (if you haven’t stuffed your face).
Coming from a predominantly Greek background I have had my fair share of Greek cuisine, and I must say that this taverna is by far the best I’ve experienced in Sydney. I’ve been going to this place for years and from other dinning experiences I can say that the servings are generous and more often than not you will end up taking a doggy bag home.
Now the greeks like a bit of everything, they don’t just stick to one main and a salad -and really why would you when theres so much on offer.
For starters I’d recommend the cheese saganaki, it’s grilled greek cheese topped with grilled sliced tomatoes. You get the saltiness from the cheese and the acidity of the tomatoes, simply beautiful. If you want just plain grilled cheese then their haloumi is definitely a must. I mean really who doesn’t like grilled haloumi with a squeeze of lemon?!
Also go for a selection of dips, their taramasalata, skordalia and tzatziki are yummy.
To accompany your dips and cheese the calamari or the grilled octopus are divine.
For your main the kondosouvli plate will give you a feast that is truly set for a Greek god. You have a choice of either pork, lamb or chicken or you can have a mixture of all three. Trust me go for the mix of all three meats you won’t be disappointed. The plate also comes with greek salad, chips and a dip of your choice (you can never have enough dips).
For desert the loukoumades are a definite standout.
The taverna has a great beverage list but you can BYO wine if you want- for a corkage fee of course! Prices are reasonable and the servings are pretty big.
If you are looking for a great night out feasting on greek delicacies than Yia Mas is certainly the venue to visit.
